BELL » Bell 47

The Bell 47 is a single rotor, single engine, multipurpose light helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter and introduced in 1946, upon which it was then introduced to the military where it served in a variety of roles and functions for 30 years. Designed by Arthur M. Young and based on the Bell 30 prototype, there have been over 5,500 Bell 47’s produced between 1946 and 1974, and they are licensed in industries in Italy, Japan, and the U.K.
In addition to the history the Bell 47 helicopter has in the military, it also holds the title as the first helicopter certified for civilian use on March 8, 1946. Though there are some variations in the design of the early models of the Bell 47, the 47G is the most common model and it easily identified by its full exposed, ‘soap bubble’ canopy, and the saddle fuel tanks and skid landing gear.
